Uganda’s International Crimes Division convicted ex-LRA commander Thomas Kwoyelo on Tuesday.
The Gulu High Court found Kwoyelo guilty of 78 out of 93 charges, including murder, crimes against humanity, rape, enslavement, and kidnapping during the 1992-2005 rebellion, but delayed sentencing.
Kwoyelo’s trial started in September 2018. He has been in Luzira Maximum Prison since 2009 after his capture by the Ugandan Army in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He is the first high-ranking LRA commander tried in a domestic court for crimes committed in northern Uganda.
This is also Uganda’s first trial of an LRA member under a High Court special division focusing on international crimes.
