Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye is critically ill in prison after three days on a hunger strike, his lawyer said Thursday.
“We visited him, and his condition is alarming. He needs urgent medical attention outside prison,” lawyer Erias Lukwago stated.
Prison officials insist their facilities can manage his health, dismissing concerns from his lawyers as “alarmist.”
Besigye, once President Museveni’s personal doctor, became a government target after joining the opposition 25 years ago.
Arrested in Kenya last November, he faces treason charges and the death penalty in what his wife calls a “sham” trial.
