Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni revealed that approximately 200 ADF fighters were neutralized by Ugandan troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) amid sustained military efforts aimed at eradicating militants affiliated with the Islamic State group.
“We have been carrying out air attacks on the terrorists in Congo,” President Yoweri Museveni said on X, formerly Twitter, adding that around “200 of them were killed” in strikes carried out on 16 September.
President Museveni further indicated that additional operations against these combatants have been carried out subsequently, although he refrained from providing specific details.
Ugandan army spokesperson Felix Kulayigye confirmed to media that the president’s remarks pertained to the ADF jihadists.
In a joint effort in 2021, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo launched military offensives against the ADF in eastern DR Congo. Despite these actions, the group has persisted in carrying out attacks in both nations.
Last October, a British man, a South African woman on their honeymoon, and their guide were tragically killed while on safari in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for this attack.
Earlier in June, a total of 42 individuals, including 37 students, lost their lives in an assault on a secondary school in western Uganda, which was also attributed to the ADF.
