UK to push Sudan resolution to UN security council vote

Britain is set to seek support from fellow United Nations Security Council members on Monday for a resolution urging Sudan’s warring factions to cease hostilities and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, according to the British foreign ministry.

With London currently holding the council’s rotating presidency, British Foreign Minister David Lammy will preside over the vote on a draft resolution co-proposed by the UK and Sierra Leone, which also emphasizes the need for civilian protection.

Lammy is expected to assert, “the UK will never let Sudan be forgotten,” while announcing a doubling of Britain’s aid commitment to 226 million pounds ($285 million), per a ministry statement.

The conflict between General al-Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces erupted in April 2023, stalling a transition to civilian governance. This power struggle has claimed thousands of lives and led to the world’s most severe displacement crisis.

Additionally, Lammy is expected to denounce Israel’s restrictions on humanitarian aid in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

On the topic of the Ukraine war, Lammy plans to reaffirm Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine, stating that the UK “will keep standing with Ukraine until reality dawns in Moscow.” He is also scheduled to address the media alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
