Ukraine has taken steps to expand its diplomatic footprint in Africa, with the inauguration of embassies in Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The move comes as part of Kyiv’s efforts to enhance its presence on the continent and counter Moscow’s influence.
Deputy Foreign Minister Maksym Subkh hailed the opening of the embassy in Ivory Coast as a significant moment in the history of relations between Ukraine and Africa. He emphasized President Volodymyr Zelensky’s directive to increase Ukraine’s diplomatic presence in Africa, which led to the establishment of the new embassies.
Subkh personally inaugurated the embassy in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, on Wednesday, with plans for additional representations across Africa to garner support. According to DR Congo’s foreign ministry, several more embassies are set to open in the region.
In the coming weeks, Subkh is scheduled to visit Ghana, Mozambique, Botswana, and Rwanda to oversee the inauguration of new embassies. The expansion of diplomatic ties underscores Ukraine’s commitment to strengthening relations with African nations.
Speaking at the opening of the embassy in Ivory Coast’s economic capital, Subkh addressed the impact of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine on African families. He highlighted the catastrophic increase in food prices and expressed gratitude to Ivory Coast for its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Ivory Coast’s backing, particularly through its votes in favor of key resolutions at the United Nations following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has been acknowledged by Subkh. The opening of the embassy marks a significant milestone in Ukraine’s engagement with Africa, as it seeks to forge closer ties and expand its diplomatic influence on the continent.
