On Monday, Tanzania’s vice-president opened a UN-sanctioned forum to boost global efforts against climate change.
The event is a key step in advancing international climate action.
Philip Mpango inaugurated the 24th Forum and the 35th Meeting of the UNFCCC’s Permanent Financial Committee at the Arusha International Conference Centre.
This marks a historic first for Tanzania.
The five-day meeting, featuring 200 participants from over 80 countries, serves as a lead-up to COP29, scheduled for November in Baku, Azerbaijan. It is the first time Tanzania hosts such a major event.
Tanzania’s hosting follows a request from President Samia Suluhu Hassan, aiming to improve access to climate finance and address funding issues for climate initiatives.
The forum’s theme is gender-responsive climate financing.
The Permanent Financial Committee, created during COP16, includes 32 members from both developing and developed nations, focusing on facilitating climate action funding.
The UNFCCC, established in 1992, works to stabilize greenhouse gas levels to avoid climate disruption.
