UN in collaboration with Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts – rep...

As world leaders meet in Abuja to discuss global counter-terrorism efforts, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is showcasing its decade-long partnership with Nigeria in combating terrorism.

A new brochure, “Supporting Nigeria in Its Struggle Against Terrorism,” details the key successes achieved by the Nigerian government and its security institutions with UNODC’s assistance.

For over a decade, Boko Haram’s indiscriminate violence in northeast Nigeria has posed a significant threat to regional stability.

The resulting loss of life, family devastation, and economic hardship necessitated new strategies from Nigerian law enforcement and security agencies.

Since 2012, UNODC said that it has provided tailored technical assistance to Nigeria, focusing on training law enforcement and security agencies to conduct investigations and prosecutions that comply with the rule of law and human rights.

It also said that it has been offering technical support to policymakers on counter-terrorism legislation and national strategies and partnering with local civil society to prevent violent extremism.

Nigeria’s National Security Advisor, His Excellency Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, emphasizes the importance of collaboration in the fight against terrorism: “Our partnership with UNODC is a testament to the importance of working together.

Together, we are ensuring the long-term resilience of our security agencies.”

Nigeria’s progress in tackling terrorism is evident. Ranked second-worst affected country in the Global Terrorism Index in 2016, Nigeria has moved down to eighth place in 2024.

While significant progress has been made, ensuring accountability for terrorist acts and supporting victims’ access to justice remain ongoing priorities.
