UN sanctions al-Shabaab, includes maritime interdiction measures

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously renewed sanctions against the al-Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia.

The resolution, submitted by the United Kingdom, extends the sanctions until February 28, 2025.

Existing measures, including an arms embargo, travel bans, and asset freezes, will remain in place.

The resolution also authorizes maritime interdiction to enforce the arms embargo and prevent the flow of materials used to manufacture improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

This decision comes as Somalia faces a resurgence of al-Shabaab violence, with the group increasing its attacks amid the Somali government’s recent declaration of an “all-out war” against the terrorist organization.

The renewed sanctions aim to support the Somali government’s efforts to combat al-Shabaab and enhance security in the region.
