Ahead of US-sponsored talks to end hostilities in Sudan, a UN spokesperson revealed that the country’s humanitarian crisis is the largest globally for children.
Thousands have been killed or injured amid ongoing conflict, making it a dire situation.
UNICEF’s spokesperson, James Elder, highlighted that five million children have been displaced in Sudan, averaging 10,000 daily.
He emphasized the crisis’s severity, noting many atrocities go unreported due to limited access.
Scheduled peace talks in Geneva on Wednesday aim to address the violence.
Tom Perriello, the US special envoy for Sudan, stressed the need for SAF’s commitment to move forward with negotiations.
The conflict involves Al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
These peace talks, expected to last up to 10 days, offer a crucial opportunity for progress.
Perriello hopes for in-person conversations, which he believes are vital for advancing toward a cessation of violence and humanitarian access.
