Unidentified assailants kill 13 in Ethiopia attack

Thirteen people, including five civilians, were killed in an attack by unidentified assailants in southern Ethiopia, according to local authorities on Thursday.

The three-day assault began on August 17 in Segen district, located in the Konso area.

Serawit Dibaba, spokesperson for the local communications department, reported that the attackers killed eight police officers and five civilians.

He stated that the extremist group fled after the attack without revealing further details about the perpetrators.

Serawit noted that the group had a history of committing crimes like murders and arson and was also responsible for killing a policeman last month.

Security forces are now patrolling the area and conducting operations to control any remnants of the attackers.

The Konso Zone Government Communication office confirmed the death toll via Facebook on Wednesday night.

They revealed that the attackers had burned and destroyed several government buildings, including the administrative office, police station, and conference hall.

Additionally, the attackers looted various items, such as hospital equipment and official vehicles.

The region has experienced deadly violence multiple times, with intercommunal conflict in 2022 displacing around 37,000 people, according to a UN report.
