Unplanned trip forces South Africa nuclear plant unit to shut down

South Africa’s Koeberg nuclear power plant experienced an unplanned shutdown of Unit 2, Eskom confirmed Sunday.

The incident, a non-technical trip, occurred while the unit operated at full capacity.

The shutdown followed work on the plant’s Unit 1, which is currently offline for separate maintenance.

Eskom officials stated that Unit 2 was safely switched off according to established safety protocols.

The power utility anticipates reconnecting the tripped unit to the national grid within 48 hours.

Koeberg, Africa’s sole commercial nuclear plant, contributes roughly five percent to South Africa’s national power supply, making the swift return to service crucial.
