The U.S. is attempting to deport eight migrants convicted of serious crimes, including homicides, according to a Homeland Security official on Wednesday.
However, the official declined to confirm whether these individuals were being sent to South Sudan, as alleged in federal court.
U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy had previously ordered the Trump administration to halt the deportation of a group of migrants to South Sudan, citing a potential violation of a court order.
The Homeland Security officials revealed that the eight men originated from Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar, Vietnam, and South Sudan, and had been convicted of murder, armed robbery, and other severe offenses.
“We conducted a deportation flight from Texas to remove some of the most barbaric, violent individuals illegally in the United States,” stated Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin.
“These are the monsters that the district judge is trying to protect.”
