US, EU donate vaccines to help DRC combat mpox

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) received 50,000 mpox vaccine doses from the United States on Tuesday to combat its ongoing epidemic.

This donation adds to the 200,000 doses previously provided by the European Union.

The DRC has been severely affected by the outbreak, with more than 21,500 confirmed cases and over 700 deaths, according to the public health institute.

The country remains at the epicenter of the epidemic.

Lucy Tamlyn, the US ambassador to the DRC, confirmed the arrival of the vaccine shipment on the social media platform X.

An additional 15,000 doses were delivered by the Gavi Vaccine Alliance.

Earlier this week, 100,000 vaccine doses donated by the EU arrived in Kinshasa, the capital of DRC, bringing the total vaccine supply to 265,000.

These vaccines were produced by Bavarian Nordic, the only manufacturer with approval for use in Europe and the United States.

The DRC has begun talks with Japan to potentially receive another mpox vaccine approved for both adults and children.

Children account for 62% of cases in the country, and four out of five deaths involve minors, according to Africa CDC.
