US provides $118 Million to WFP to aid millions displaced in Africa

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a crucial infusion of $118 million from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to provide critical assistance to over one million displaced people in Eastern and Central Africa.

This funding comes at a critical time, as the number of displaced persons in the region has surged dramatically in recent years, reaching a staggering 26.5 million.

Conflict, including the ongoing war in Sudan, and the devastating impacts of climate change, such as the prolonged drought in the Horn of Africa, have driven millions from their homes.

The WFP will utilize these funds to provide vital food assistance, including cash transfers and in-kind food aid, to refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, and host communities in several countries within the region.

However, despite this significant contribution, the WFP continues to face severe funding shortages.

This has forced the agency to reduce food rations for millions of people across the region, highlighting the urgent need for increased international support to address the growing humanitarian crisis in Eastern and Central Africa.
