Week of mourning declared in Comoros after deadly cyclone

Comoros has declared a week of national mourning following the destruction caused by Cyclone Chido in nearby Mayotte.

President Azali Assoumani announced the mourning period, which will last until Sunday.

Cyclone Chido, with winds over 220 km/h, hit Mayotte on Saturday, causing widespread damage.

The category four storm is the worst to strike the region in nearly 90 years.

Authorities fear the death toll could reach “several hundred,” especially in Mayotte’s shantytowns, which were flattened by the cyclone.

Many of the residents in these areas are Comoran nationals.

Mayotte, just 70 km from Comoros, has a population of 320,000, with about half from overseas, mostly Comorans.

Many travel to Mayotte illegally, with an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 undocumented migrants living there.

Cyclone Chido’s impact has left widespread devastation, with entire communities destroyed.

Comoros mourns as the region grapples with the aftermath of this disaster.
