A survey by an MSF research group reported that violence, especially sexual violence, occurs “daily” around displaced persons camps in eastern DR Congo, highlighting a severe humanitarian crisis.
The M23 rebels, active again since 2021, have taken control of large areas in North Kivu, eastern DRC.
Their offensive has killed many people and displaced hundreds of thousands from their homes.
Backed by Rwanda, the M23 rebels have encircled Goma, North Kivu’s capital, intensifying conflict and insecurity.
This has severely impacted the region’s stability and exacerbated the refugee crisis.
An Epicentre report surveyed families in four camps west of Goma.
It revealed that over 10% of young women reported rape between November 2023 and April 2024, a shocking statistic of ongoing violence.
MSF’s statement stressed the persistent, alarming sexual violence around camps.
Victims are often attacked by armed men while collecting resources, revealing the precariousness of their daily lives.
