Guinea’s capital, Conakry, was brought to a standstill on Monday as the nation embarked on an indefinite general strike. This key test for the 2021 military junta turned deadly, with two young lives lost in clashes with security forces.
The strike, called by a confederation of major unions, demands the release of a detained media activist, lower food prices, and an end to media censorship. Schools, shops, and streets remained empty on the first day, with only limited services offered at hospitals.
Sporadic clashes erupted in the city’s outskirts, leading to the deaths of two young men. One victim, an 18-year-old, was allegedly shot in the neck by security forces. A doctor at another hospital confirmed the death of another young man in similar circumstances.
The incident drew strong criticism, with the father of one victim accusing the junta leader of doing “worse” than past authoritarian rulers. Even government officials expressed support for the strike, highlighting the frustration among Guineans with their leaders.
The strike comes a week after the unexpected dissolution of the transitional government by the military, raising concerns about the future of the country. This incident, coupled with the strike fatalities, further intensifies the tense situation in Guinea.
