Zambia has reported its second mpox case in three months, highlighting the persistent threat of the virus in Africa.
The latest case involves a 34-year-old woman from Kitwe, Copperbelt Province, whose husband recently exhibited similar symptoms.
The man had been working in a neighboring country grappling with mpox outbreaks.
“Both patients are stable and closely monitored. A rapid response team is tracing contacts to prevent further spread,” Acting Health Minister Douglas Syakalima confirmed on Friday.
Eight individuals identified as close contacts are currently under observation.
Authorities have intensified surveillance and urged citizens to practice hygiene and vigilance.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that Africa has recorded nearly 14,000 confirmed mpox cases across 20 countries, resulting in 60 deaths this year.
According to the WHO, the Democratic Republic of Congo remains the most affected, with over 9,500 cases and 43 fatalities. Burundi and Uganda follow with significant outbreaks.
Fourteen countries in the region have reported new cases in recent weeks, underscoring the virus’s ongoing spread.
However, six countries have shown progress toward containing the outbreaks.
