Zambian battalion completes year-long CAR peacekeeping mission

A Zambian military unit has returned to Lusaka after a successful one-year mission in the Central African Republic (CAR).

The 178-member Zambian Battalion Number Nine (ZAMBATT IX) landed at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Saturday.

The troops had been serving under the United Nations Multinational Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSCA) in the CAR.

Military officials praised the unit for their professionalism and dedication during the challenging mission.

Army Col. Gen. for Staff Liyungu Akushanga welcomed the returning troops and commended their commitment to protecting civilians.

“I applaud the troops for upholding the high standards set by previous battalions in the conflict region,” Akushanga said on Zambia’s state television.

Contingent commander Moses Shapwaya credited the success to the team’s unity and resilience.

He noted that their efforts had created a safer environment for local trade and movement.

The ZAMBATT IX mission has been succeeded by ZAMBATT X, which has now been deployed to the CAR.

The new cohort will continue to focus on ensuring the safety of civilians, particularly women and children.
