Zambia’s Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu alerted the nation to a potential tragedy unfolding in Chingola, as more than 30 individuals were suspected to be trapped beneath the rubble in a makeshift mine for copper, renowned for its illegal open-cast digging activities.
Addressing parliament, Minister Mwiimbu disclosed the distressing situation without delving into further specifics regarding the incident.
Authorities from the mines ministry refrained from immediate comment, opting to conduct an inspection at the site located in the Chingola region, situated approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of the capital city, Lusaka.
Zambia holds a prominent position as one of the globe’s primary copper producers, with Chingola located within the country’s copper-belt region.
The area hosts extensive open-cast copper mines, characterized by waste hills towering up to 100 meters (300 feet) in height.
