Zambian politician detained for accusing Congolese president

Zambian Socialist Party leader Fred M’membe was arrested Thursday and charged with seditious practices.

The charges stem from an article he published on his X and Facebook accounts alleging corruption by Congo President Felix Tshisekedi.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga detailed that M’membe’s article, published on July 16, 2024, claimed Tshisekedi paid US$20 million to silence Zambia.

The article allegedly aimed to incite hatred against the government.

Hamoonga emphasized that the law would be enforced firmly against anyone inciting disaffection towards the government.

He assured the public that legal measures would be taken against such actions.

M’membe, 65, has been detained and is expected to appear in court soon.

His lawyer, Simon Mwila, confirmed the arrest and said they were working to secure a bond for him.

Cosmas Musumali, head of the Socialist Party, defended M’membe, asserting that his comments were evidence-backed and that he was prepared to present his case in court.
