Zimbabwe’s parliament plunged into darkness during budget speech

A power outage disrupted Zimbabwe’s parliament as Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube wrapped up his budget speech. President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, and MPs were left in the dark, with opposition members likening the incident to the nation’s struggles.

The blackout, attributed to a lightning strike, occurred despite parliament’s dedicated power supply, according to ZESA spokesperson George Manyaya. Zimbabwe faces daily 12-hour blackouts due to reduced energy production at Kariba Dam, caused by prolonged drought.

Ncube highlighted a 15% contraction in agriculture but forecasted 6% economic growth next year, citing expected above-average rainfall to boost electricity and farming.
