African Group supports Okonjo-Iweala for another WTO term

The African Group has requested that WTO chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala run for a second term, as revealed in a document on Friday.

Okonjo-Iweala, the first female and African leader of the WTO, began her term in 2021. Her current term ends in August 2025, and she has yet to announce her future plans.

Chad, representing the African Group, believes it would benefit the WTO to start the reappointment process early, urging Okonjo-Iweala to consider a second term.

The document highlighted the importance of advancing initiatives under her leadership before the next major meeting in Cameroon.

According to WTO rules, Okonjo-Iweala, 70, must decide by November whether to seek reappointment.

Speculations suggest she might decline if Donald Trump, who opposed her, wins the U.S. presidency.
