Algeria issues international wheat tender

Algeria’s state grains agency, OAIC, has announced a new international tender to purchase milling wheat, traders disclosed Sunday.

The tender seeks a nominal 50,000 metric tons, but Algeria’s history suggests actual purchases could far exceed this figure.

Interested suppliers must submit price offers by Tuesday, December 24, with offers remaining valid until Wednesday, December 25.

Shipment periods vary by region, with European deliveries scheduled for February and earlier timelines for South American or Australian suppliers.

In October, OAIC procured approximately 600,000 tons of milling wheat for December shipment, underscoring the scale of its market activity.

France, once Algeria’s primary supplier, faces increasing competition from Russian and Black Sea region exporters. Diplomatic strains between Algeria and Paris have further reduced French wheat’s presence in tenders.

OAIC emphasizes impartiality, stating that all suppliers receive equal treatment despite shifting market dynamics and geopolitical influences.

The outcome of this tender will likely illuminate Algeria’s evolving wheat procurement strategy amid global market changes.
