DRC’s Gecamines moves to secure US copper sales

Congo’s state miner Gecamines announced it will buy 100,000 tonnes of copper from CMOC’s Tenke Fungurume mine this year.

The purchase equals 20 percent of the mine’s annual output, reflecting Gecamines’ ownership stake and strengthening its grip on national resources.

The company said deliveries will be spread across the year, with shipments directed to the United States market.

Gecamines named Swiss trading house Mercuria as its strategic partner, providing financial strength, logistics expertise and technical support.

The copper sales are expected to align with recent agreements between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the United States.

Congo, a cornerstone of the global copper supply, is pushing reforms to control exports and reshape its role in metals markets.
