Equinor continues to pursue $42b Tanzania LNG venture

Norwegian energy company Equinor is committed to advancing its $42 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Tanzania. This commitment comes despite delays caused by proposed changes to a financial agreement established last year.

Senior vice president Nina Koch discussed the project at an African oil and gas conference in Cape Town. She emphasized the importance of finalizing commercial agreements for the Tanzania LNG initiative.

Negotiations have faced challenges since the Tanzanian government proposed alterations to the agreement. Both a government spokesperson and two company sources confirmed these delays to Reuters in May.

Koch stated, “Our focus now is to agree on the commercial agreements for Tanzania LNG.” Her remarks highlight Equinor’s determination to move forward despite the setbacks.

Equinor’s commitment reflects the company’s long-term strategy in East Africa’s energy sector. The company aims to establish a stable partnership with the Tanzanian government and other stakeholders.

Koch also noted that there are currently no specific timelines for resolving the issues surrounding the agreement. This uncertainty adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing negotiations.

The Tanzanian government has not yet provided a response to inquiries about the status of the negotiations. Their silence raises questions about their intentions and plans regarding the LNG project.

Equinor’s investment in Tanzania is seen as a critical step towards enhancing the country’s energy landscape. The project promises to contribute significantly to Tanzania’s economy and energy exports.
