Nigeria drops $1.1 billion claim against Eni in oilfield deal

Bloomberg News reported on Thursday that Nigeria is retracting civil claims amounting to $1.1 billion against Italian energy company Eni ENI.MI concerning alleged corruption in an oilfield deal.

As per the report citing a letter concerning the OPL 245 field, Nigeria’s Justice Ministry will unconditionally and immediately withdraw the claims before Italy’s highest court no later than November 17.

An Eni spokesperson, in response to a request for comment, confirmed the receipt of the letter concerning OPL 245 and expressed satisfaction with the Nigerian government’s decision.

The energy group stated its readiness to collaborate with the Nigerian government in exploring the essential procedures for converting the license from prospecting to mining, aiming to guarantee developmental prospects for the field.

In 2021, a Milan court acquitted Eni, its CEO, and Shell (SHEL.L) in a corruption case related to the purchase of the Nigerian oilfield.
