Zambia hosts Israeli minister to boost agriculture, water ties

Zambia and Israel committed Thursday to deepening cooperation and strengthening ties between Lusaka and Tel Aviv. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema hosted Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, highlighting opportunities in critical minerals and water harvesting for mutual investment benefits.

“During my 2023 visit to Israel, we signed a framework agreement covering agriculture, irrigation, health, and heart disease treatment training,” Hichilema told reporters. He lauded Sa’ar for reopening Israel’s embassy in Lusaka after five decades, describing the move as a testament to enduring friendship.

“The embassy reopening reflects long-standing relations rooted in mutual respect, shared values, and common beliefs,” Hichilema added before their State House meeting. Sa’ar described his visit as part of Israel’s broader 2025 strategy to strengthen Jerusalem-Africa engagement and diplomatic presence across the continent.

“This trip, combined with our embassy reopening after 52 years, marks a new chapter in Israel-Zambia friendship and wider African relations,” Sa’ar stated. Both leaders emphasised the potential for collaboration in agriculture, health, and infrastructure, envisioning projects that deliver tangible benefits for citizens.

Zambia and Israel also pledged continued dialogue and cooperation, signalling growing diplomatic, economic, and strategic engagement between the two nations. The meeting underscores a renewed commitment to shared prosperity, innovation, and stronger ties, building on decades of historical connection and trust.
