Egypt’s intelligence chief, Hassan Rashad, met with an Israeli negotiation team led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer in Cairo to discuss de-escalation efforts in the Gaza Strip, Egyptian media reported Tuesday.
The meeting centered on ceasefire efforts and occurred after a Hamas delegation concluded its Cairo visit on Saturday as part of indirect negotiations.
An Egyptian strategic affairs expert described the talks as “serious,” reflecting Egypt’s intensified efforts to halt the aggression in Gaza.
This meeting follows recent engagement by Hamas with Egyptian officials to pursue a ceasefire and continue mediation efforts by Egypt and Qatar to restore calm in Gaza.
While no official statements have been released by Cairo or Tel Aviv regarding the outcome, Egypt, Qatar, and the US have been actively mediating to end the conflict.
Hamas stated it concluded extensive discussions with Egyptian officials on April 26.
The Israeli military renewed its assault on Gaza on March 18, breaking a previous ceasefire agreement.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 52,300 Palestinians since October 2023, predominantly women and children.
This has led to war crimes allegations against Israeli leaders at the International Criminal Court, with Israel also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
