Abiy Ahmed welcomes Wang Yi to discuss Ethiopia-China ties

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed received Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the National Palace on Thursday.

The talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing regional issues of mutual interest, according to the Ethiopian prime minister’s office.

Wang expressed Beijing’s intention to elevate the “all-weather strategic partnership” with Ethiopia to new heights, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

Abiy highlighted Ethiopia’s interest in cooperation across infrastructure, new energy, artificial intelligence, and maritime affairs during their discussion.

The Chinese minister urged accelerating economic and trade cooperation, including infrastructure, green industries, and the Belt and Road Initiative.

Wang also called on Ethiopia to provide a favourable environment for Chinese companies to invest and operate in the country.

He added that China seeks a constructive role in promoting regional peace, stability, and mutually beneficial collaboration across the Horn of Africa.

Diplomatic relations between China and Ethiopia date back to 1970, upgraded to an “all-weather strategic partnership” in 2023.

Wang is on a two-day visit to Ethiopia to deepen strategic ties before continuing to Somalia, Tanzania, and Lesotho on January 12.

This marks the 36th consecutive year that Africa is the first overseas stop for China’s foreign minister in the new year.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning described Africa as “a grand stage for international cooperation” and praised joint efforts for peace and development.

She emphasised that China respects African sovereignty and has long partnered with the continent in struggles for national independence.

China has become Ethiopia’s largest investor and trading partner, with annual trade reaching roughly $3.5 billion, the ministry reported.

Beijing has completed highways, power stations, water supply projects, and veterinary stations, demonstrating deep economic engagement in Ethiopia.

China has been Africa’s top trading partner for 15 consecutive years, with trade hitting $314 billion in the first 11 months of 2025.

Last year also marked 25 years since the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was established, highlighting enduring diplomatic and economic links.
