A suicide attack that ripped through Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan on Thursday has claimed the lives of at least 26 people, according to medical sources at Mirwais Hospital, one of the city’s largest medical facilities.
This figure significantly surpasses the official death toll reported by the Taliban administration, which stands at 3.
Hospital data obtained by a doctor who wished to remain anonymous reveals 26 fatalities and at least 38 injuries resulting from the blast.
The attack, which targeted the Kandahar branch of Kabul Bank, reportedly occurred at around 8:00 AM local time.
Afghan media suggests the attack may have targeted civil servants queuing to collect their salaries.
While the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021 has brought a degree of improvement to the country’s security situation, sporadic attacks continue to plague Afghanistan.
The terrorist group Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) has claimed responsibility for many of the recent attacks, particularly those targeting the minority Shiite Hazara population.
