Cairo summit tackles Gaza truce, $53B recovery

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with Palestinian counterpart Mohammad Mustafa in Cairo on Sunday to discuss efforts to sustain a ceasefire in Gaza and implement a reconstruction plan backed by the Arab League.

Madbouly reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Palestinians, emphasizing their right to remain on their land.

He underscored Egypt’s role in coordinating a $53 billion reconstruction initiative approved by an emergency Arab League summit on March 4, aimed at rebuilding Gaza over five years without displacing residents.

He stressed that maintaining the ceasefire is crucial to preventing further bloodshed and initiating early recovery efforts.

Mustafa echoed this urgency, stating that adherence to the truce would enable the rebuilding process to move forward.

The discussions come amid renewed violence in Gaza.

Since Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes have killed over 700 Palestinians and injured more than 1,000, breaking a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement established in January.

Since October 2023, Israel’s military offensive has killed more than 50,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 113,000, according to Palestinian health officials.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant last November, citing war crimes in Gaza.

Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military actions in the enclave.
