Court cancels Romania’s election over Russian meddling

Romania’s constitutional court annulled the presidential election Friday, citing Russian interference that allegedly boosted far-right frontrunner Călin Georgescu.

The decision, just days before the runoff, cited “massive irregularities,” including cyberattacks and social media manipulation, as grounds for cancellation.

President Klaus Iohannis will stay in office until a new election is organized following last weekend’s legislative results.

Georgescu, who won the first round on November 24, called the annulment a “coup d’état,” while opponent Elena Lasconi condemned it as “immoral.”

Public reactions are divided, with some seeing the decision as protecting democracy and others calling it politically motivated.

Romania, an EU and NATO member bordering Ukraine, now faces heightened political instability as far-right parties gain ground.
