Deported Palestinian convicts arrive in Turkey under ceasefire deal

Fifteen Palestinian convicts, among dozens released by Israel under the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, have arrived in Turkey after being deported to Egypt, the Hamas prisoners’ media office confirmed.

These individuals are the first to be taken in by a third country other than Egypt under the ceasefire terms, which prohibit convicts convicted by Israel of violent attacks from returning to Palestinian territories.

Israel has long maintained that many of those imprisoned were involved in acts of terrorism, while Palestinians view them as resistance fighters battling Israeli occupation.

A Turkish security source confirmed that the 15 deported convicts traveled via Egypt but provided no additional details.

The first phase of the ceasefire has so far resulted in Hamas releasing 18 hostages, while Israel has freed 583 Palestinian convicts. At least 79 of those released have been sent to Egypt.

According to Hamas sources, some of these individuals may also be sent to Algeria or Qatar.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday to discuss ongoing developments in Gaza and tensions with Iran.

The ongoing conflict erupted following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people and resulted in more than 250 hostages being taken. Israel’s military response has since killed over 47,000 Palestinians and devastated large parts of the Gaza Strip.
