Dozens dead after bus plunges into gorge in India

A tragic accident on Thursday claimed the lives of at least 21 Hindu pilgrims in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

A bus carrying devotees skidded off a mountainous highway in the Jammu region and plunged 150 feet (45.7 meters) into a deep gorge.

Health officials confirmed 21 fatalities and reported 35 injured passengers, some in critical condition.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Authorities identified the bus as carrying pilgrims en route to the Shiv Khori temple in the Reasi area of Jammu.

This incident underscores the ongoing issue of road safety in India.

The country holds a grim record for road fatalities, with hundreds of thousands killed or injured annually.

Reckless driving, poorly maintained infrastructure, and ageing vehicles are often cited as contributing factors.

The Kashmir bus crash adds another layer of tragedy to India’s recent history of deadly accidents. In 2022, a bridge collapse in Gujarat claimed the lives of over 130 people.
