Egypt moved on Wednesday to secure the release of Egyptian sailors held by Iranian authorities after a video showed a citizen aboard a detained vessel.
The Foreign Ministry said Minister Badr Abdelatty ordered urgent action to track developments and ensure the safety of Egyptians involved.
Assistant Foreign Minister Haddad El-Gohary said Egypt’s Interests Section in Tehran immediately contacted Iranian officials to seek clarification and access.
The outreach confirmed that four Egyptians were aboard the vessel Reem al-Khaleej, now held at Iran’s southern port of Bandar Abbas.
El-Gohary said a consular officer has been dispatched to the port to provide legal support and press for their prompt release.
The ministry offered no explanation for the vessel’s detention, leaving the sailors’ fate suspended in diplomatic uncertainty.
The incident unfolds as tensions rise between Tehran and Washington, with Iranian officials warning of sweeping retaliation against any US attack.
