Europe plans stricter Russia sanctions with US help

The European Union is preparing a new wave of sanctions against Russia, according to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.

Speaking to AFP, Barrot revealed plans for a 17th package of penalties, coordinated with upcoming US measures targeting Moscow’s economy and energy exports.

Barrot said he assured US Senator Lindsey Graham of Europe’s commitment to align both the substance and timing of the sanctions with Washington.

He accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of being the “sole obstacle” to peace in Ukraine, criticising Moscow’s continued military aggression.

The EU and US have maintained firm pressure on Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, demanding an unconditional withdrawal.

Barrot contrasted Russia’s stance with recent Ukrainian steps toward diplomacy and economic recovery, including a critical minerals agreement with the United States.

He suggested France might also seek a deal with Kyiv, citing its own capabilities in rare earths and interest in post-war reconstruction.

Despite Ukraine’s willingness to engage, Barrot said Russia “has made no effort” toward a ceasefire or peace, distancing itself from international hopes.

His comments followed a candid meeting with US Secretary Marco Rubio, where both reaffirmed their shared vision for resolving the crisis.

Rubio underscored President Donald Trump’s aim to halt the “senseless bloodshed,” pledging deeper coordination with European allies.

Barrot framed the moment as pivotal for Europe, calling for renewed unity and strategic autonomy within NATO, echoing President Macron’s long-standing appeals.

On the issue of US-imposed tariffs, Barrot advocated de-escalation to rebuild trust and restore pre-Trump trade relations for mutual benefit.

As war drags on, EU leaders appear determined to sustain pressure—seeking both to constrain Russia and lay groundwork for Ukraine’s future.
