France, UK discuss Ukraine troop aid

France is actively consulting with Britain and Ukraine on the potential deployment of troops to support Kyiv in its war against Russia.

President Emmanuel Macron revealed the ongoing discussions in an interview with Le Parisien on Saturday, offering a rare glimpse into military-level coordination among European allies.

“There have been several exchanges between our British, French and Ukrainian chiefs of staff,” Macron said. “All this is becoming clearer and making progress.”

While Macron stopped short of detailing what a foreign military presence might look like, he stressed, “The key is to have troops in Ukraine.”

The French leader spoke from Kyiv, where he joined the leaders of Britain, Germany, and Poland on a high-level diplomatic visit amid intensifying conflict in the region.

During the visit, the European leaders held a phone call with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who endorsed a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.

France, along with its European partners, has thrown its weight behind the ceasefire proposal as a vital pause in hostilities and a chance to reinforce Ukraine’s defence capabilities.

Macron’s comments reflect a significant shift in Europe’s posture toward the war, signalling that military involvement may no longer be off the table.

The consultations mark a new phase in Western support, as Kyiv’s allies seek to balance deterrence with diplomacy in the face of escalating Russian aggression.
