South Africa officially took over the G20 presidency on Sunday, becoming the first African nation to lead the global bloc.
President Cyril Ramaphosa called it a “significant day,” highlighting the G20’s role in representing 75% of global trade.
“Our economy may be small, but our influence reflects our global positioning and resilience,” he stated in Limpopo province.
With “solidarity, equality, and sustainability” as its theme, South Africa aims to spotlight African and Global South priorities.
Ramaphosa pledged to tackle inequality, strengthen global health responses, and support conflict-affected regions like Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine.
The presidency will focus on inclusive growth, sustainable development, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
South Africa’s leadership marks a major milestone for Africa on the global stage.
