Haiti’s interim president, Leslie Voltaire, has condemned a deadly gang attack during the reopening of Port-au-Prince’s General Hospital on Christmas Eve, which resulted in the deaths of two journalists and left several others injured.
Speaking on the incident, Voltaire expressed his outrage, stating, “In the name of the transitional presidential council, we condemn what happened today… when members of the population, journalists, and policemen were attacked.” He extended condolences to the victims’ families, the Haitian National Police, and the journalist association, adding, “This act will not go unpunished.”
The attack occurred as reporters gathered to cover the reopening of the hospital, which had been shut down earlier due to escalating gang violence. Suspected members of the Viv Ansanm gang coalition opened fire, turning the event into chaos.
The Online Media Collective identified the slain journalists as Markenzy Nathoux and Jimmy Jean. Graphic footage from the scene showed two lifeless, bloodied bodies being carried on stretchers, one still wearing a press credential.
Port-au-Prince remains under the control of street gangs, which dominate around 85% of the city, severely hampering vital services. Despite government efforts to regain control, violence continues to surge, with journalists and law enforcement often targeted.
Haitian authorities have vowed to investigate the attack and hold those responsible accountable.
