Greek islands hit by quakes, no volcanic link found

A series of minor earthquakes has been recorded across the Greek Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, with tremors felt in Santorini, Amorgos, and nearby islands, raising concerns over potential volcanic activity.

The latest quake struck off the coast of Amorgos at 15:29 local time, registering a magnitude of 4.3, following a 4.1-magnitude tremor at 14:49. Earlier in the day, a 3.9-magnitude quake was detected 25 km north-northwest of Anafi at a depth of 15 km, according to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens. The region has since experienced multiple aftershocks, with weaker tremors ranging from 2 to 3 on the Richter scale, including a 3.1-magnitude quake recorded 18 km south-southeast of Arkesini, Amorgos.

Despite public concerns over a possible link to the Santorini volcano, seismologists stress that there is no direct connection between the quakes and volcanic activity. Experts attribute the seismic cluster to the region’s complex tectonic movements, which frequently generate such tremors.

Authorities have advised residents and tourists to stay updated through official channels and adhere to any safety guidelines.
