US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents briefly detained the son of Democratic Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar during a traffic stop, she said Sunday.
Speaking to CBS Minnesota affiliate WCCO-TV, Omar said ICE agents pulled over her son before being released.
She said the agents let him go after he produced his passport, which he routinely carries for identification.
Omar accused ICE of racially profiling young men who appear Somali and treating them as presumed undocumented migrants.
She said the incident reflects growing pressure on the Somali community amid heightened immigration enforcement.
ICE has not publicly commented on the traffic stop or Omar’s allegations.
The episode comes as President Donald Trump intensifies rhetoric against Somali immigrants and Representative Omar.
Trump has linked Somalis to his push for a permanent immigration ban targeting several countries, including Somalia.
During a Cabinet meeting, he claimed Somalis “contribute nothing” and used derogatory language to describe their country.
The president warned that continued immigration would, in his words, take the nation “the wrong way.”
Omar dismissed Trump’s remarks as obsessive, calling his fixation on her and the Somali community unhealthy.
She said such language encourages discrimination and fear among immigrant communities nationwide.
On Friday, Omar formally raised concerns with federal authorities over ICE conduct.
In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, she alleged blatant racial profiling.
The letter also accused agents of using unnecessary force, urging accountability and greater oversight of immigration enforcement.
