ISIS terror attack kills 23 Syrian soldiers

At least 23 Syrian regime soldiers were killed in an attack on a military bus in the conflict-torn country’s east blamed on ISIS, a war monitor said Friday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday that 23 Syrian soldiers were killed and 10 were wounded in the attack on a desert road near the eastern town of Mayadeen, in Deir Az Zor province that borders Iraq.

The Observatory said “dozens of other soldiers” were missing after the armed men surrounded the bus and opened fire, in what was the deadliest attack so far this year by ISIS.

Despite losing their final territorial foothold in Syria in 2019 to a US-led coalition, ISIS managed to retain concealed locations within the Syrian desert, from which the group has orchestrated deadly attacks and swift hit-and-run operations.
