Israel and Lebanon extend truce to Feb 18 — US

The United States confirmed that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the deadline for Israeli troops to withdraw from southern Lebanon until February 18, 2025. This agreement comes after a request from Israel for more time beyond the original 60-day timeline.

The White House issued a statement on Sunday, detailing the agreement between the governments of Israel, Lebanon, and the United States. The statement also highlighted the commencement of negotiations regarding the return of Lebanese prisoners captured after October 7, 2023.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continuing the ceasefire agreement with Israel until February 18. Mikati’s statement followed consultations with the Lebanese president and parliamentary leader, ensuring the country’s dedication to stability.

The extension was prompted by the need for further time for Israeli troops to withdraw safely. The move aims to maintain a fragile but ongoing ceasefire that has helped prevent further escalation of tensions.

In addition to diplomatic efforts, the United States has pledged $117 million in security assistance to Lebanon. This funding will support Lebanon’s efforts to maintain the ceasefire and promote peace with Israel.

Despite these efforts, recent violations have raised concerns. The Israeli army committed eight breaches of the ceasefire last week, pushing the total number of violations to 629 since the agreement took effect on November 27, 2023.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place since October 8, 2023, following intense fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The ceasefire, now extended until February, is seen as vital in preventing further conflict.
