Israel’s military announced on Saturday that the nation is bracing for potential escalation after claiming responsibility for the death of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. Officials expressed hope that this event would lead to a shift in Hezbollah’s actions.
“We hope this will prompt a change in Hezbollah’s behavior,” said Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani during a media briefing, following the announcement of Nasrallah’s reported death.
However, Shoshani emphasized that weakening the Iran-backed group’s capabilities would take time, acknowledging that Hezbollah’s attacks against Israel have been ongoing for a year.
“There’s every reason to believe they’ll continue their attacks, or at least attempt to,” he added.
While no new instructions were issued to Israeli civilians regarding safety measures, Shoshani confirmed that the country remains on high alert. “Hezbollah has been escalating tensions for a year… with Iran’s backing,” he said, pointing to Tehran’s support of both Hezbollah and Hamas.
“We are prepared for broader escalation,” Shoshani stated, highlighting that Israel has already been engaged in a multi-front conflict for the past year.
