Israel launched airstrikes on military bases and infrastructure in Damascus, Hama, and Homs on Wednesday, the Israeli military said.
The strikes severely damaged Hama’s military airport, injuring both civilians and soldiers, according to Syria’s foreign ministry.
On Thursday, Israel reported killing armed militants in an overnight operation in Tasil, southern Syria, after its forces came under attack. Troops responded with ground and aerial strikes.
Tensions along the Israel-Syria border have escalated following the Islamist-led government’s rise to power after the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad. While Israel has vowed to prevent militant presence in southern Syria, Syrian authorities say they are not seeking conflict.
Israel has long targeted Syria’s Iran-linked military sites, particularly those tied to Hezbollah. While arms routes from Tehran were disrupted after Assad’s fall, Israeli airstrikes on Syrian military bases have continued.
Syrian officials said the attacks targeted Hama’s military airport and the Barzeh scientific research facility in Damascus, which Israel previously accused of missile and chemical weapons development.
A Syrian military source told Reuters that Israeli airstrikes destroyed Hama’s airport infrastructure, including runways, towers, and weapons depots.
“Israel has systematically dismantled the country’s key airbases,” the source said.
Israel also struck the T4 airbase in Homs, a frequent target in recent weeks.
