Israeli airstrike kills two in southern Gaza amid ceasefire talks

An Israeli airstrike killed two Palestinians in Rafah on Saturday, medical sources said, as mediators pushed to extend a fragile 42-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The Israeli military said it targeted a drone that crossed from Israel into southern Gaza and struck “several suspects” attempting to retrieve it, describing the incident as a failed smuggling attempt.

The strike follows an Israeli drone attack on Friday that killed two people in Gaza. The Israeli military said the strike targeted suspected militants planting an explosive device in northern Gaza.

Meanwhile, Hamas representatives are in Cairo for ceasefire negotiations, with Egyptian and Qatari mediators working to advance the deal and potentially pave the way to ending the war.
