Lebanon hopes for imminent ceasefire with Israel

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed optimism on Wednesday that a ceasefire deal with Israel could be announced within days.

This follows the leak of a draft agreement by Israel’s public broadcaster, Kan.

The draft, allegedly written by the U.S., outlines a 60-day truce with Israel withdrawing its forces from Lebanon within the first week.

This largely aligns with previous reports.

Mikati credited U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein’s efforts, who is set to visit Israel on Thursday.

He revealed that Hochstein suggested a potential agreement before November 5th.

While the White House spokesperson, Sean Savett, clarified that circulating drafts don’t reflect the current negotiation stage, he didn’t comment on whether the Kan-published draft serves as a negotiation basis.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified over the past five weeks, leading to significant casualties.

Hezbollah, under its new leader Naim Qassem, has indicated a willingness to consider a ceasefire under specific conditions, but Israel’s stance remains unclear.
