Mexican soldiers kill 6 migrants from Egypt, Peru, El Salvador

Six migrants who were fatally shot by Mexican soldiers in Chiapas on Tuesday hailed from Egypt, El Salvador, and Peru, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday.

The incident, which left ten others injured, occurred as the migrants attempted to evade a military patrol in a pick-up truck carrying 33 people.

Sheinbaum called the event “regrettable” and vowed that it would be thoroughly investigated, emphasizing that such tragedies must not happen again.

Mexico’s defense ministry said soldiers acted after hearing explosions and as the vehicle tried to flee.

The incident has reignited concerns about violence and security in the region near Mexico’s border with Guatemala, where cartel-related conflict has intensified.
