Palestinian groups claim Gaza ceasefire deal nears finalization

Hamas and two Palestinian groups announced that a ceasefire deal with Israel is “closer than ever,” provided Israel does not impose new conditions.

Indirect negotiations, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, have shown promising progress. A joint statement issued after talks in Cairo noted agreement on key points.

A Hamas leader confirmed that significant strides have been made, with most ceasefire and prisoner exchange terms agreed upon.

“Only a few unresolved issues remain, but they don’t hinder the process,” the leader said, adding that the deal could be finalized before the year ends.

If successful, the agreement would unfold in phases, including a prisoner exchange, permanent ceasefire, and withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed hope, calling for urgency in securing the deal.

The negotiations aim to release hostages taken during Hamas’s October 2023 attack. Of 251 hostages, 96 remain in Gaza, with 36 presumed dead.

Despite progress, key obstacles remain, such as Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza and post-war governance. Netanyahu opposes Hamas regaining control, complicating the talks.

The fragile negotiations continue to hold potential for a lasting resolution.
